Why Your Business Is Invisible to ChatGPT (And How to Fix It)

70% of local businesses have zero AI visibility. Here's why ChatGPT, Google AI, and Perplexity can't find your business — and the specific platforms you need to optimize.

When someone asks ChatGPT "Who's the best plumber in Austin?", your business should show up. But for 70% of local service businesses, it doesn't.

We scanned 219 businesses across 8 US cities and found that the vast majority had zero AI visibility — meaning AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google AI, and Perplexity didn't know they existed.

The Problem Isn't Your Reputation

Here's what surprised us most: businesses with thousands of Google reviews and perfect 5-star ratings were still invisible to AI. One plumbing company with over 33,000 Google reviews scored 0/100 on our AI visibility scale.

Why? Because AI systems don't pull from Google Reviews the way you'd expect. They have their own data sources.

Where AI Gets Its Data

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity each pull business information from specific places:

  • Foursquare powers roughly 70% of ChatGPT's local business results. If you don't have a claimed, optimized Foursquare listing, ChatGPT likely doesn't know you exist.
  • Google Business Profile feeds Google AI Overviews — the AI-generated answers at the top of search results.
  • Yelp data flows into Siri, Alexa, and other voice assistants.
  • Bing Places powers Bing Copilot and Microsoft's AI tools.
  • Your website's structured data (Schema.org markup) helps every AI system understand what your business does, where you're located, and what services you offer.

The Fix Is Straightforward

The good news: once you know which platforms matter, fixing your AI visibility is a concrete, actionable process:

  1. Claim your Foursquare listing — Most businesses don't even know they have one. Go to business.foursquare.com and search for your business.
  2. Complete your Google Business Profile — Every field matters. Categories, service areas, business hours, photos, and Q&A all contribute to your AI visibility.
  3. Verify your Yelp listing — Even if you don't actively use Yelp, claiming and completing your listing affects how voice assistants recommend you.
  4. Add Schema.org to your website — This is the structured data that tells AI systems exactly what your business does. Most local business websites are completely missing this.
  5. Ensure NAP consistency — Your Name, Address, and Phone number should be identical across every platform. Inconsistencies confuse AI systems.

First-Mover Advantage

Right now, only 1.2% of local businesses are recommended by ChatGPT. That means the competitive landscape is wide open. Businesses that optimize for AI visibility today will have a significant advantage as more consumers shift to AI-powered search.

45% of consumers already use AI tools to find local services. That number is growing every month.
